Ceaușescu had a road blasted over the Făgăraș ridge because he could. It opens around the start of July and shuts when the snow returns — Bâlea Lake at the top is the whole point.

Brown bears near Brașov, then a castle
Libearty at Zărnești keeps a hundred-odd bears rescued from roadside cages and restaurant pits. Feeding time sets the schedule; most trips bolt Bran on afterwards.

Therme is a glasshouse the size of a stadium north of the airport: palm trees under the roof, mineral water pulled from two kilometres down, slides at one end and an adults-only garden at the other. Take the evening slot with a transfer and the whole thing costs less than a castle day.

Belle-Époque banks under glass domes, an Arc de Triomphe in the wrong city, and behind them the terraces of Lipscani where the whole Old Town eats outside from April. Walk it in a morning; drink it in an evening.

The Bucharest that Ceaușescu built has not gone anywhere.

Only the Pentagon covers more ground, and nothing anywhere weighs more: four billion kilos of Romanian marble and oak, a thousand rooms, and a chandelier of five thousand bulbs above a hall that is still mostly empty. Two practical things — you cannot get in without booking a slot ahead, and you cannot get past the desk without the passport or ID card you booked under.

The Slănic Salt Cathedral
The Unirea mine at Slănic Prahova is a hollowed hall on the scale of a cathedral, cut in trapezoid galleries and held at a steady twelve degrees all year. People come down here to breathe — the air is prescribed for asthma. There is a football pitch on the floor and a playground beside it, ninety metres under a hillside.

The Transfăgărășan
Ceaușescu had the army blast a road over the Făgăraș mountains after the Soviets rolled into Prague, in case he ever needed to move troops fast. It cost lives and six million kilos of dynamite, it goes nowhere useful, and a television crew once called it the best driving road in the world. Snow shuts the top from November; the season runs roughly July to October.
